I keep hearing all this old tosh about eating five portions of fruit and veg a day but I must say it makes no sense to me. I like to think I’m reasonably well versed in nutritional issues, having done a huge amount of research into the subject when I became a veggie not far short of thirty years ago and I try to keep up with developments and changes in recommendations.
What exactly is a portion? Who can tell? It seems to range from a couple of dessert spoons of something to half a truck full depending on the source you read. Is an onion, chopped and added to a chilli for example a portion? What if the chilli serves two? What about the tin of tomatoes? Do they count? Why don’t potatoes count? Why do lentils count? Does it matter if you eat them raw or cooked? Are dried things as good as fresh? It’s all very well for people to make these sweeping recommendations but the supporting information is rubbish in my view.
Recently the expression ‘eat a rainbow’ came to my attention and I decided this was a much better thing to think about. I reckon that if we eat a rainbow then we’re probably going to be OK. I hope so anyway because that’s broadly what I’ve been doing all of my adult life.
When I looked up the phrase I see it’s in wide use and when I googled it I found six hundred odd matches. I wonder why I’ve not heard it before recently when it seems to be so commonplace now?
This photo is crap really and not what I had in my mind’s eye at all. BUT after investing half an hour in going to the supermarket to buy this stuff then another half an hour prepping it and photographing it, I’m not now in the frame of mind for anything else today. The bite out of the apple doesn’t really work for me after all my planning and the leering rictus of the squash is just plain off-putting. Still, on the bright side the blueberries worked much better than I thought they would!!
Sometimes getting a shot can be easy, other times it is a complete chore. Today is the latter. However, I feel pretty smug about posting it after Monsieur Chirac's comments about British cuisine, he's ended up with egg on his face today after losing out to our Olympic bid!!! Serves him right I say....
Two years ago, my little girl was up to mischief.....as she has been today! Last year, I was also in the position of posting a fairly crappy shot!!!
