pleasure and pain

So, now you all think I'm some sort of weirdo who still cries for her beloved Toby four years after his death....

Imagine my joy when, this morning, David appeared in my office with a Spurs shirt on. This, remember, is the man who hates football! He loved the game last week and was really looking forward to today's game and so he thought he'd put on 'the great shirt'. I was so proud and thrilled - we talked about the team on the way as 'we' - him too - not 'you' (if you see what I mean). He even talked about buying a season ticket for next year so he can go every week. It was all going better than I could have ever hoped for. I would never have guessed he would ever feel like that.

Well fortified with a couple of beers in the Bell and Hare we went off to the ground to our seats. Still going well. Fulham scored but we were on top of the game, had most of the possession and dominated, doing everything but score.

Then Glenn Hoddle decided on a new strategy - take off Ledley King (for those of you who don't know, a defender) at half time and bring on Bobby Zamora (a striker). I'm sure the idea was get a goal early in the second half them romp home to victory! Well, that was the plan - the truth was Fulham caught us on the break because of our thin defence not once more but twice more. DISASTER.

So now David has retracted his desire to become a season ticket holder himself and says Sarah and I are welcome to ours - I think I'm going to have a hard job persuading him to the match on 20th....another one Sarah can't make.

Still - unless you are a Manchester United fan or an Arsenal fan these things happen.

Back to my first season at the Lane - 1976/7 - immediately before we went down to the Second Division (as was - now known as the First Division) - my ex (Paul Williams) used to coax me to go to games by saying 'if we win, I'll buy you a badge' then the following week 'if we win, I'll buy you a scarf' etc. He didn't spend much money as I recall as we were rubbish that season and got relegated!!! So my early days at White Hart Lane were often painful too. I hope that doesn't make me sound like a 'money grabber'.

I do, though, recall a day - maybe 1979 or 1980 ish - we'd been drawn against Wrexham in the FA Cup 3rd round I think. I went to the match with a crowd of friends but couldn't get in because it was sold out. It was in the days of standing room rather than seats. We watched most of the game on the TV in the Railway Tavern round the corner from the ground and we were 0-2 down when we noticed lots of fans leaving the ground - we thought 'hey, we can sneak in and see the last few minutes' so we did. Spurs scored three times in those last ten minutes and we saw all three goals. WONDERFUL. So today is my pot half full or half empty.....full of course.
