13th July 2015 - the continuum of unpopularity

DM is a self-confessed geek, to wit (according to dictionary.com anyway): a digital-technology expert or enthusiast (a term of pride as self-reference, but often used disparagingly by others); a person who has excessive enthusiasm for and some expertise about a specialized subject or activity; a peculiar person, especially one who is perceived to be overly intellectual, unfashionable, or socially awkward. Now he’d definitely say he’s the first of these and he’d also completely concur with the notion of pride in association.

Despite the fact that the term nerd very definitely has negative connotations, this is a moniker which I wear with some pride, regardless of dictionary.com’s definition of: a stupid, irritating, ineffectual, or unattractive person; an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit: Do I care? No.

So imagine my surprise when this little parcel turns up through the letterbox today – it’s a tube of nerdwax. DM has decided that being a geek isn’t far enough along the continuum of unpopularity and he’s about to slaver himself in nerdwax just to take him that bit further along. What does that mean in the grand scheme of things? Well, it means that he’s planning to make himself even more unpopular so he can join me with the flotsam and jetsam of life.

So, where do we go from here? We fight back of course. We don’t let the bastards grind us down.
