5th March 2015 - a thousand...nay, a million stars

Every droplet of water in the fountains in Generalife (part of the Alhambra Palace) refracts sunlight into a tiny star. Every tiny star lights up this special place. Once again, I find myself moved to tears by the staggering beauty of the Alhambra Palace. We are here again because, well because a single day just isn’t enough. I don’t think the human mind is capable of absorbing all of the beauty and specialness of the place in so short a time so we’ve returned to soak up some more.

What’s most amazing about the fact that the Palace hosts somewhere in the region of 6000 visitors per day is that it was almost razed to the ground by Napoleon when he retreated from Spain. It was only because of a crippled soldier, who hid in the building and removed all of the fuses from the bombs set by Napoleon that this amazing group of buildings remain standing. I think we all owe that bloke a huge debt of gratitude.

I must confess that I’d have happily spent all three days of our visit here but for the fact that a poor, beleaguered girl in the Tourist Office got a little hoity with me and told us that Granada has so much more to offer than the palace alone. I think we both felt so guilty that we decided that yesterday we’d better go and see some of the other fabulous things the city has to offer.
