8th November 2014 - seriously amazing...

The moors, like our garden are full of mushrooms and toadstools at the moment. I love the way they thrust their way up through soil and groundcover plants then make these magnificent structures. The best bit is that these are the momentary fruiting bodies of something much, much bigger that lives underground all year round acting, you could say, as a detritivore, breaking down organisms and releasing their nutrients. Many plants live in symbiotic relationships with fungi, using the nutrients that the fungi release in their activities. We get the rare privilege to see them at this time of year but for the rest of the year they go about their fungi business and most of us barely know they are there.

Many make great food, and most importantly yeast is a part of this family so we get our bread, beer and wine from the same group of organisms. Seriously amazing? Who can argue with that?
