Our holiday has been typified by ambling around the coast exploring the nooks, crannies, coves, castles and beaches that make up Pembrokeshire’s coastline. This photo was shot at one of the most westerly parts of the Wales, Marloes peninsula at St Martin’s Haven harbour. These days, the harbour hosts mainly tourist boats, taking people to Skomer and Skokholm Islands or on round trips to see the seabirds of the islands. The names Skomer and Skokholm feel very Scandinavian and this may be linked to the fact that there was a big community of Norwegians in this part of Wales a thousand years ago.
This little cove looks very welcoming and benign in the mid-summer sun but I’m sure, like Cornwall, in the depths of winter it’s a lot less pleasant. This equipment was almost certainly used to haul fishing boats onto the beach although these days I doubt it even turns.
Pembrokeshire is a lovely place although be warned, it has even more rain than Cornwall so we have been extremely lucky to have spent the week in glorious sunshine. It’s funny, I’ve always avoided it before because of the oil refineries at Milford Haven but, although you can’t miss them on the skyline, they don’t really have a major impact on the beauty of the place.
