30th January 2014 - stranger than fiction

Weirdly in spite of today being such a crunch day, I found myself, at 10am, doing something curiously delightful. One of the things we have to do on this placement is to teach PE (Physical Education for anyone who isn’t up with the lingo) and to be formally assessed as a PE teacher. It’s a critical part of education and it’s one that many teachers, myself included, are terrified of. Since I’ve been on my placement I’ve only managed to see two PE sessions because there have been a number of other things I’ve been obliged to do in that slot. So, it was with great trepidation and a seriously unhealthy dose of pure adrenaline based fear, that I leapt up in front of 30 6-7 year old children to teach them dance!!!!!!!!!

I had it all planned – a warm up, more of that in a mo, a main bit which contained a cross-curricular link to Maths of all things, and a warm down. My warm up? Get “Everybody needs somebody to love” blasting out of the hall sound system and throw some moves for my tiny people to imitate and use to warm up their little muscles. You can picture the scene. I’m no Jane Fonda am I? Anyway, I plastered a humungous (that’s a word from spending too much time with the little people) smile across my choppers and went for it big time. In the first few moments, quite a lot of them were standing there bemused and looking at me as if I’d lost the plot but by half-way through the song, they were all copying my moves with equally ginormous (see what I mean) grins. By the time the fading bars ended, I was out of breath and they were warm.

My fear of PE has been assuaged, at least for now, and I survived my lesson relatively unscathed but more importantly my little people all ended it unscathed and happy. Phew. I don’t know if my score will be high enough for what I need but if it’s not, there is always next week. Maybe it’ll be “bend over let me see you shake your tail feather” next week!!!

I got to use DMs whistle. It was so strange that I thought I might have been transported through a gap in the space:time continuum! Honestly, I can say it was so much fun that I can’t believe I might be able to actually earn money doing that one day. How amazing a thought is that?

It's a great thought and if the powers that be are smart they will give you a little extra to keep you happy working for them! Anytime you can teach something and the kids are enjoying it, everybody wins! I say, congratulations, I think you aced this part for sure!
