This is a one-shot-wonder. I set up the camera and tripod and pressed the shutter once and once only. No time for faffing. No time for niceties or thinking about what would make a great image. Just a very symbolic loaf of bread.

It’s the loaf of bread made today by DM, as he does most week days. It's cooling on a cooling tray on the side in the kitchen after being removed from the bread machine a few minutes earlier. Today’s is a mix of white bread flour and malted seeded flour. Tomorrow morning I will “butter” two slices with a little mayonnaise, add lettuce, tomato and cucumber, wrap in foil and take to work for my lunch. If I’m lucky I’ll get to shove it down, either while working or in a five minute break between “stuff”.

You’ll see it was taken at 9.15pm. That was precisely 41 minutes after I arrived home and in-between-times I had cooked gnocchi , with a home-made spinach, tomato and cream sauce and eaten said meal. The food was being consumed a mere 17 minutes after arriving home. Today’s working day was almost 14 hours long – so forgive me for repeating myself, teaching is no picnic.

DM looks after me really nicely while I’m working. He makes sure there is food for my following day’s lunch, following the best of biblical traditions, cleans, exercises dogs and deals with the things I have no time for. He’s my hero.
