It’s been years since I needed to wear a watch. When you work in an office, you don’t really need one because you have a clock on your PC, one in your car and of course most people also have one on their phone (unless you are a luddite like me).

Since I started at Uni I’ve found myself more and more in need of a reliable watch and none of my watches has been able to fulfil this role. I got a new battery for my old Citizen but it worked for a fortnight then stopped completely (after I wasted a tenner on it). Then I tried my old wind-up Seiko that I was given for my 18th birthday and it’s probably only still with me because it spent ten years behind the bed in the spare room of my buddy Shazbop’s house after I stayed there on my birthday about 15 years later. It had a habit of stopping randomly, then starting again about half an hour later so wasn’t reliable enough. Finally I tried my old Bambi watch, another Seiko, given to me when I was eight to celebrate knowing how to tell the time. This one would just lose 10 mins or so every now and again. So, I had three watches, none of them reliable and the cost of watch servicing much higher than the cost of buying a new watch. That bugs me so badly but there is not a lot I can do about it.

At Christmas, my Mum and Dad gave me money that I used to buy this – another Seiko but this time one with a snazzy device that charges it in the light. It never needs winding up and it's supposed to last forever. Now that's the kind of gadget i like. It’s rather fab. Thanks Mum and Dad.
