30th January 2009 - paint

I have just started the stripping process in our own kitchen. I’ve not quite finished the kitchen I was doing before but for one reason or another it can’t be completed now.

As you know, I like proper colours but also as anyone who moves to Cornwall also knows it’s hard to escape the colours of the sea and the light. So, this is the light here. We’re trying to decide between these grey/green/blues for our kitchen. This is, according to the wonderful “coast” very typical of the needs of folks who move here and who are we to say we’re immune to the feel of the place.

Don’t worry – they’re not as muted as they look in the tins, I’m not going soft. They’re actually quite strong colours but they’ll only be seen in small doses.

We’re tending towards the one bottom right (a Farrow and Ball paint) but are waiting to see it in the daylight before a final decision is made.

There is a primal force driving me – I can’t bear the thought of our wedding guests seeing what I’m cooking in now…..hopefully I’ll fool them all into thinking our home is hygienic and clean if I can get it done before they arrive!

The boss says "Farrow and Ball? Pah. The coverage is s@*!, durability is s!@*, it's marketed to appeal to people who want period colours and have more money than sense. The claim on their website 'By significantly reducing the solvent in our products, over 90% of paint within the Farrow & Ball range is now classified as having either a low, minimal or zero* VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) content' can be applied to most paint manufacturers and applies to the whole of the Johnstones emulsion range."

I say "pretty pretty blue on the bottom right. Go for that one, it will be gloriously reflective and light".

I am the girlie girl, he is the paint chemist/geek.

Posh paint! I'm sure it will look wonderful when finished - perhaps you'll take a picture for us?
