Buffalo Bull

Kruger, South Africa

The African Buffalo (Syncerus caffer) aka Cape Buffalo is up to 1.7 meters high, 3.4 meters long and males can weigh 500-900 kg. Owing to its unpredictable nature which makes it highly dangerous to humans, it has not been domesticated. Old bulls that are no longer with the main herd are particularly dangerous. Because of their power and disposition, African buffalo are considered the most dangerous game species in Africa. Nonetheless they have been heavily hunted for trophy and food. The scientific name Syncerus caffer is derived as follows: Sun (Greek) together; keras (Greek) the horn of an animal: a reference to the closely abutting bases (or boss) of the horns in adult male buffalo. Cafer (L) of Caffraria/Kaffraria, the country of the Kaffirs (Africa). Reference: http://www.ultimateungulate.com/Artiodactyla/Syncerus_caffer.html
