The donkey or ass (Equus asinus) is a domesticated animal and a member of the Equidae (horse) family. Donkeys can interbreed with horses to produce hybrid offspring. The offspring of a female horse and a male donkey is called a mule. The offspring of a female donkey and a male horse is called a hinny or jennet. Mules are more common than hinnys, they are surefooted and stubborn and have been widely used for transportation in the past.
