13 - The future of Virginia Woolf’s Three Guineas is You

Hagar Roubev Room
Workshop 6 The future of Virginia Woolf’s Three Guineas is You - by Marta Correia

With this paper I intend to show how I have used Women in Black’s, more specifically Women in Black Belgrade’s ideas, ideals and work to demonstrate that Virginia Woolf’s essay Three Guineas is a relevant and necessary text in today’s world. As a student in the University of Porto, Portugal, this was one of the focus of my MA dissertation in Literature – Women’s Studies, presented in December 2013. I would like to share my academic reflection with the people who put the text into practice: you. It is you who, through the principles you advocate and the constant resistance you show, give Three Guineas an application for the future and reveal how Woolf’s insights are valid to this day and continue to be a source of inspiration for those who fight against inequality and war.

WHAT ARE NEW INSIGHTS THAT YOU DISCOVER IF YOU COMBINE THE POWER OF OUR DNA WITH THE CONCLUSION OF THIS WORKSHOP ?

- we know the past & the present: we need a future to prevent war; a new generation to continue
- our job is to educate non-violence in public and personal relations
- the system needs change… Still!
- we need to work with our reality today and find inspiration in people like Virginia Woolf
- let’s go for little victories and a new language
