The transformation in the practice of dowry is complete and unrecognisable. What was perhaps conceived of as a safety net for a woman has become her death trap and a deadly debt trap for the parents. But the increasing deaths of women due to the ever excalating demand for money, material goods and property it seems has ceased to shake our collective conscience and complacent institutions.

At this session we will receive the testimonies of parents and families who have lost their daughters in the most cruel and horrifying acts of violence for which there is no justification. It will speak to their pain and their loss that can never be compensated. It will speak of the seeming irrelevance of the law and the inadequacies in the existing criminal jurisprudence that is unable to grasp and respond to a violence that is so personal, subjective and domestic.
