Since this mill was rebuild in 1956, new technology was introduced, like this horizontal drive wheel that could be engaged or disengaged by turning the lever you see. Pulling it to the left means lifting the wheel into the large brakewheel so that the shaft started turning. In the old system you had to pull the shaft with horizontal wheel outwards to disengage.
