Old Windmills - Sweden

These windmills are one of the most beautiful and best preserved windmills of Öland. Most of them are so called post mills; the entire millhouse can turn around the central supporting post. (There are a few pictures of windmills where only the top with the wings can turn and a few pictures of windmills in Skåne).
The windmills have to a great extent lent character to Öland. The first mills were probably set up at the end of the Middle Ages, and in the middle of the 19th century there were some 2000 windmills on the island. About 400 mills remains as monuments of one of the primary industries of the island.

Can you please explain if each mill was privately owned by the farmer and if it was used to grind what type of grain? Millet, barley,wheat? Just curious.

Hi I am endeavouring to trace an old mill at Torsjo, Solberga parish in Skane Lan. Can you help me? My great grandmother was born on 9 August 1852 & baptised at the mill on the owners (Ahlstrom) property. Im coming to Ystad inSeptember & will trying to find the old mill....Many thanks Maris

Very interesting gallery, especially the pictures of the interior mechanics. It clearly reminds me of the childhood summer tours to Öland in the 1970s.
