Swallow-tailed Kites



Elanoides forficatus

In my opinion, this is perhaps the most beautiful and incredibly graceful of all raptors.
This kite captures and eats insects in midair.
Although not currently listed as endangered by the Federal Govt., the swallow-tailed kite
is listed as endangered by the state of South Carolina and as a threatened species in the states of Texas and Mississippi.

According to the Nature Conservancy, the Swallow-tailed Kite is one of the most threatened
land birds currently without federal protection under the Endangered Species Act of 1973.

Destruction of habitats is the primary reason for the decline in numbers.
The Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge in Florida is a major conservation area.
