This is an endemic species on Maui and is on the Federal List of Endangered Species.
Nesting areas are found on Maui at Kanaha and Kealia ponds.
Based on the biannual Hawaiian waterbird survey from 1998 through 2003, the Black-necked Stilt population averaged 1,350 birds.
