Sandhill Crane (Grus canadensis)

According to Sibley (The Sibley Guide to Birds) two subspecies exist, the greater and the lesser.
The Greater (Grus canadensis tabida) breeds from Canada southward whereas the lesser breeds in the far north.
The lesser (Grus canadensis canadensis) is small, short-build, and short legged.
The greater is larger and up to 50% longer billed than the lesser and is relatively short-winged.
The greater has paler primaries with whitish shafts.
The Florida Sandhill Crane, (Grus canadensis pratenis), is much less common with some 5,000 individuals remaining.
This subspecies is on the ESA endangered list

Here in Florida we have a pair who walk within 10' of the back door and along the road in front of the house. We haven't been lucky enough to see them in flight yet. Those are great pictures
