Alabama's Mobile-Tensaw Delta is the second largest delta in the United States and is sometimes called America's "Amazon". It is made up of the great Mobile and Alabama River systems and contains one of the wold's most diverse aquatic environments. It encompasses approximately 260,000 acres in a 40-by-10-mile area of marshes, cypress-tupelo swampland and bottomland hardwood environments.
It is home to some of the most diverse wildlife in the southeastern U.S. including 126 species of fish, 46 mammals, 69 reptiles, 30 amphibians and at least 300 species of birds, including more than 110 which nest in the region. The Delta is also a host to a wide diversity of plants including rare orchids and lilies.
The delta is among the greatest global hot spots for endemism, that is species that exist nowhere else on earth.
The photos below chronicle the observations we made with our friends, Christa and Tom Straub, as we traveled only a small portion of this vast area as well as Pitcher Plant Bogs and other adjacent wildlife viewing areas.
