I believe it was these type of bees that I observe coming and going from out of what looks like an ant hill located on mowed shaded grass. However this hill had two entrances, one slightly higher than the other with entrance holes of about 3/16 inch in diameter. I see the bees come up to the outside and sit there just inside the hole. If a shadow passes over them they retreat. I would surmise their nest is below ground. I saw one bee arrive with back legs packed with pollen and go into the taller entrance. My daily walk takes me past this hill and I observe it getting a little bit higher each day. A week or so ago it had been flatten by the wheels of a mowing machine. Since then it has bee rebuilt to a height of about two inches. Does this agree with the observation of others. I thank my son for findind your site and its spledid pictures. RM 6/13/06 PS I took a digital picture of entrance.

Halictid bee, probably a male, several possibilities for genus:-)
