Somateria mossissima
Female: Left
Male: Right
A pair of mature Common Eiders at Pine Point near Scarborough Marsh, coastal Maine.
Note: Hunting reduced southern populations of the Common Eider in the Atlantic
to near extinction by the end of the 19th century. Populations appear to be currently
healthy although Arctic populations are declining.
The Common Eider is the largest duck in the Northern Hemisphere.
