The humpback whale Megaptera novaeangliae is a type of baleen whale. They range from 30-52 feet in length and weigh about 79,000 lbs. These whales typically migrate up to 16,000 miles each year. They feed in the Alaskan waters in the summer and migrate to warmer waters to give birth in the winter. Humpacks were hunted to the brink of extinction but a whaling moratorium was established in 1966. Today there are an estimated 80,000 humpback whales worldwide. Our guides were Captain Ron Loesch of Whale Song Cruises out of Petersburg and Captain Cook of Adventure Bound out of Juneau.
