"Threatened" Gopher Tortoises

These tortoises are indigenous to the southeast US.
They average to be about one foot in length and about 30 lbs in weight.
The Gopher Tortoise digs and lives much of its life in burrows.
Burrows can be as short as 6-10 ft. but they average around 30 feet and their depth is about 3-20 feet deep.
The tortoises are herbivores and feed on many species of low-growing plants.
The Gopher tortoise's numbers continue to drop due to habitat destruction and human use as a pet or meat.
The US Fish and Wildlife Service has listed the tortoises as "Threatened".
In Florida, the tortoise is listed as "Endangered".
