Southern Flying Squirrel.......A new guest at our bluebird box.

Glaucomys volans

This gallery features images of the Flying Sguirrel that claimed residency in our bluebird house!

The Southern Flying Squirrel doesn't really fly but rather
use a flap of loose skin that extends from wrist to ankle called a patagium.
These squirrels need mature forest stands with canopies and hardwoods and are seldom found in younger forests.
They are vulnerable to loss and fragmentation of habitat due to urban sprawl and logging.
