The Southern Flying Squirrel doesn't really fly but rather use a flap of loose skin that extends from wrist to ankle called a patagium. These squirrels need mature forest stands with canopies and hardwoods and are seldom found in younger forests. They are vulnerable to loss and fragmentation of habitat due to urban sprawl and logging.
