The Eastern Bluebird is one of the most iconic birds of North America.
The bird went from being as common as many songbirds to being so rare.
that birdwatchers were convinced that it was headed for extinction>
Loss of habitat, pesticide use, weather changes, introduction of
competitive bird species such as the House Sparrow and European Starling.
In 1978, the North American Bluebird Society (NABS) introduced bluebird
nesting boxes and set up a network of trails to monitor the health of the birds.
The public was educated and volunteers were trained as monitors and the result
is one of the most successful examples of conserving a species in the US.
The Eastern Bluebird Population rebounded and has been stable ever since.
