Images in this gallery are identified as either:
Common, White, or Tropical Checkered Skippers (Pyrgus Genus)
Note: Per the Alabama Butterfly Atlas, Common and White-Checkered Skippers can only be reliably
distinguished from one another by dissection. Therefore, my ID's for these two species may be questionable My identifications are based only on the location where the photos were taken.
Common or White Checkered Skippers (Pyrgus communis, or Pyrgus albescens) respectively.
The Common (P. communis) is widespread but absent from southern California and southern Texas
The White (P. albescens) occurs in far western states and southern Texas
The White has also been reported in Florida, western Tennessee and is apparently spreading east
Where their ranges overlap these species are indistinguishable except by genitalia examination of males
The Tropical is typically found in the coastal plain of the southeastern states and west to Arizona
The Tropical is distinguished from the Common/White by a white spot just beyond cell-end white bar
present and enlarged and the dark forewing towards the apex (not checkered all the way to the tip)
