American Oystercatcher

Haematopus palliatus

True to its name, this bird is specialized in feeding on bivalves
oysters, clams, and mussels) and uses its brightly colored bill to get at them.

The bird is classified as a species of high concern in shorebird conservation plans
for the Eastern and Gulf coasts of the US because of its small overall population
(11,000) individiuals, widespread habitat loss. The species occurs only in the coastal
zones that support intertidal shellfish beds.
