This Giant Lichen Orbweaver spider (Araneus bicentarius)
was found slowly building a web by meticulously stringing filaments from a large tree to the ground below.
Glad to hear you have seen this amazing spider. I just observed another specimen and will be posting several new photos to this gallery soon. Thanks for your comment.

Live in Medina, Ohio and found this next to my back door. I was totally freaked out, being that I'm originally a "city girl", and was happy to find out what exactly it is. Thank you!

Have one living in a oak tree in Tampa Fl. Builds a huge web at night that reaches the ground from branches 20 feet above.

I live in southern Ontario and saw one of these just sitting on the sidewalk. It was about the size of the Canadian $2 coin. I think is was dead or close to being dead, because it didn't move at all when I walked near it, and it had it's silk spread around the sidewalk.
I immediately knew this was an orbweaver, but I couldn't identify the specific type

My 11 year old daughter and I were picking blackberries in our back yard in the Brushy Pond community in Northwest Cullman County, AL on July 4th when she noticed this huge spider web hanging between two small trees. I pulled on one of the trees, causing the web to detach and suddenly this huge spider came sliding down a string of silk out of a rolled-up leaf. Instead of spraying the spider with poison and killing it, she retrieved a clear plastic jar (complete with screw-on lid), and we were able to capture the spider alive. It is now building a web inside the jar. We plan on giving it to Cooks Pest Control in Cullman so they can display it in their awesome museum is Decatur, AL.

I have a friend who lives in Rabun County in Northeast Georgia who found this spider in her house, but had no idea what kind of spider it was. I was able to find out for her, thanks to your page!
Extraordinary collection of images! I was hiking in northern Alabama this summer and stumbled upon a very large spider I had never seen before. Thanks to your collection I was able to ID it as a Giant Lichen Orbweaver.
