The Timkat Festival, the biggest celebrationn of the year in Ethiopia, marks Epiphany on the Western Gregorian Calenadar. Timkat commemorates Christ's baptism in the Jordan River by John the Baptist.
Worshippers dress in the dazzling white of traditional Ethiopian dress, in dramatic contrast to the brilliant-hued velvets and satins of the priests' ceremonial robes and umbrellas.
