Agricultural Sector
Situated at the entrance to the city of Machu Picchu, this area consists of granaries, store houses and a series of large terraces. The terraces, built of irregular stones, were joined with the natural slope of the mountain to overcome the otherwise difficult terrain.
The terraces, which are around 3.5 metres tall and 3.2 metres wide, are connected by a network of aqueducts and steps. The agricultural sector would have provided food for the entire population of Machu Picchu and also to cultivate plants that had a ritual purpose such as maize and coca.
