Ibn Musa al-Khorezmy

Muhammad Ibn Musa al-Khorezmy, a famous scientist of the East from ancient Khorezm was born in the epoch of great cultural and scientific progress in the Islamic world. In 830 al-khorezmy was the first to compose an algebraic treatise and laid the foundations of mathematical traditions in the world. The “Hisab al-gabr al-mukabala” (A short book of compensation and confrontation) was one of the most important and popular works by al-Khorezmy. Translators shortened the title of this book to one word “al-gabr”. When western scientists began to use this term in mathematics, they translated it into Latin as “Algebra”. Another treatise on Indian and Arabic numbers also belongs to al-Khorezmy. The Arabic text of this work was lost. Its Latin translation is Algoritmi de numero Indorum and the English version of “al-Khorezmy about Hindu Calculation Art” originated such mathematical terms as “algorithm or algorism”. Thus, the foundations of mathematical traditions were laid in the world.
