We went by this farm on our tour and found out that generally, the white house is the parent's home, where they live while raising their families. As the sons grow to adulthood they are usually given several acres of the overall farm and a red "honeymoon" house is built for the new couple to live in for the next 10 years before they move up and acquire their own "white house". When the youngest son gets to adulthood and marries, he and his wife take over the house he was raised in, he gets the farm and his parents semi-retire and move into a small cottage adjacent to or very near the "family home". In this particular case, this huge red "honeymoon house" is part home but mainly work shop where the young man builds Amish furniture.
