Dave and I have enjoyed reading Amish books the most the past couple of years. While researching this trip I Googled and found out that there was a large Amish settlement around the Ethridge, TN area (roughly 220 - 250 Amish farms). I further found out about an excursion there - taking a 1.5-hour long Amish Wagon Tour. There are two different companies that do those in Ethridge. The one we took had wagons that held about 16 people. I accepted the driver's offer to sit up front with he and another tourist, (who got to drive the horses some). Our tour took us out in part of the Amish farm area, stopping at four Amish farms where we could get out and purchase some of their wares. I knew from reading Amish books that they don't like their pictures taken so I knew not to do that but found out on our tour that we weren't supposed to take pictures of their farms either (in case they might be out working in the fields or around the house/barn). However, after our wagon tour, we drove around a short bit in our car and I took a few photos, ensuring first that there were no people visible. We learned from our guide that Ethridge's population is about 2,000 Amish and 500 Englisher's. The first farm we stopped at the wife was 75 years old, had 12 kids and 118 grandkids. Her oldest daughter was 35 and has 10 kids all under the age of 12. A different farm stop, the basket maker is 72 years old, has 17 kids and 138 grandkids.
