At the top of the stairs next to the landing is a door leading to the upstairs hallway that can be closed, dividing the upstairs from downstairs. Now that we're empty-nester's, having that ability really helps with our electricity bill, as each floor has its own A/C and heating unit and we keep the upstairs several degrees to the extreme of what the downstairs is kept comfortably at.
