Bench Test
June 28

Portland, Oregon

Welcome to my other world! The world of large motors and stuff like that.
Anyone who has done any electrical or electronics work will know what I
mean when I talk about bench testing. Well, here we have a shot of a crew,
at the facility where I work, "bench testing" a 12,000 hp electric motor!
Not a stellar shot, but I hope interesting from a "you don't see that
everyday" angle. If you look closely at the center of the photo you can
see that the motor is spinning. The rotating part (called the rotor) is
turning at about 1400 rpm.

This is a very interesting photograph. My son is a mechanical engineer and he and his friends seem to really enjoy their work, too. Very rewarding, I am sure. Nice photo.

Reminds me of an assignement I did with ABB in Switzerland, where the smallest motor they made was a traction motor for Lokomotives and the larger ones had an axle height of 1.60 m.

Cool shot. Always neat to see real test equipment at work. Must be fun to actually touch
hardware. Much different from my world of running computer simulations to predict the
performance of the hardware. Hard to get my hands dirty that way;-)
