Arrhenia epichysium

Cowlitz River shore forest, Lewis County, Washington

A small omphalinoid species that grows on wood or (as shown above) moss-covered wood. Caps Usually 15-20 mm with a deep navel, decurrent grayish gills and white spores. Cap color deep gray brown to nearly black. Margin striate to some degree. Too small for table fare. A lookalike species, Arrhenia telmatiaea, grows exclusively in sphagnum moss.
