At the narrow northwest end of the square lies the entrance to Státní zámek Telč, the state castle of Telč. It was originally a Gothic castle was built in the second half of the 14th century. In the middle of the 16th century the nobleman Zachariáš of Hradec had the castle altered in the Renaissance style. The first stage of reconstruction was lead by the well-known architect Leopold Estreicher of Slavonice. While touring Italy, Zachariáš recruited Italian artists to work on the castle. The completion of the general appearance of the castle was assigned to Baldassare Maggi of Arogno.
