These are the eggs from which the Promethea moth caterpillar emerges. When newly emerged the larvae are yellow and black https://pbase.com/laroseforest/image/175290730), but in their final instar they look like the NEXT photo. These eggs were found on black cherry, but the final instar larvae I saw yesterday, were feeding on an Ash tree nearby.
