Gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis)

Beechwood

A photo from four years ago. Although called Gray Squirrels, many, like this one, are obviously black in colour. They are the same species, but the melanistic phase. There has been speculation that the reason so many of the gray squirrels in the northerly areas have developed this melanism is that it aids in heat retention, a thermal advantage in fact. Some speculate that the black fur helps with camouflage in woods. Or maybe the reason is something else altogether.

Such a lovely pose. I've occasionally seen a black squirrel in my travels but have never been lucky enough to get a great photo like this.

They looks cute all dressed in black. I have never seen any like that around here.

Is the black form more common in the north of the species' range? That would surely be tellling.

Such cuteness. It looks like he's using his tail to keep himself warm.

black is the chic option....this one appearscold despite the thermal advantage...around here all the grays are black but for one, possibly an old fashioned guy..

He's almost charcoal - very dark indeed.
