These caterpillars are almost always in asters, sometimes in goldenrods. With one exception, the ones I've seen this year have all been on Flat-top White Aster, either in the flower heads or on the stem as here. One of the more colourful and intricately patterned of the moth larvae. The head is at the top peering right.
