Harris's three-spot moth caterpillar (Harrisimemna trisignata), #9286

Larose Forest

Found on an ash tree (Fraxinus). This is a small but peculiar looking caterpillar which often has shed head capsules dangling down, as here. It looked like a small bit of plant debris at first, but then it moved. Wagner (Owlet caterpillars of eastern North America) says the species shows a preference for plants containing iridoid glycosides; ash is one of these.

This caterpillar turns into a very attractive moth: https://pbase.com/laroseforest/image/170352273

looks like a cross between a candied date and a gummy bear...dangling head capsules sounds odd, and looks strange too....knockout shot Christine..
