Elm sphinx moth larva (Ceratomia amyntor), #7786

Larose Forest

This large caterpillar was on the underside of an American elm leaf. From a distance I thought it was just a dead leaf. It unfortunately has a big cluster of Parasitic fly (Tachinid) eggs on its head (on the right) which will kill it. These larvae, if they live, will turn into very large sphinx moths the following year https://pbase.com/laroseforest/image/167648719).

What’s good for one isn’t for another. An interesting story and a great photo.

Oh, the poor dead leaf act will not save it. What a cute wrinkled old thing! V

Too bad the 'dead leaf' act didn't fool the Tachinid. Superb portrait nonetheless. V

Well detailed capture of this larva, but too bad about its fate. V.
