Gold-spotted ghost moth (Sthenopis pretiosus), #0022

Larose Forest

Bug Guide gives this as a reason for the odd name "Ghost moth": "to attract females, the male hovers over open ground, sometimes slowly rising and falling (like a ghost)." There are a number of species in the ghost moth family (Hepialidae). The gold colour on this species easily shows why the common name.
