Double-toothed prominent moth caterpillar (Nerice bidentata), #7929

Larose Forest

Having not seen many of these caterpillars for some years (except for a dead one last year), I was happy to find four of them within about an hour, all on elms, which are their only larval food source. Apparently the serrated humps on the body are meant to resemble the edge of an elm leaf. The adult (moth) is a very handsome creature: https://pbase.com/laroseforest/image/167791250

This one looks like jelly or rubber and the adult moth is a mixture of fur and bark. What an amazing transformation and great photos.

It amazes me how you show such tiny creatures in such detail - quite an education to see the variety.

Great shot! I see what you mean about it mimicking the edge of an elm leaf and the under body is similar to the twig bark. The moth is a handsome creature! V

Are you sure that's not an "octuple-toothed" prominent? :-) Great find and shot.
