Pearly wood nymph moth (Eudryas unio), #9299

Garry Fen

Best viewed in original.

Walking back along the trail through the fen, I counted four of these beautiful moths at different locations, one mating pair, and the other ones resting. Definitely this moth is not a little brown job. I find this one to be exceptionally beautiful. It is relatively small perhaps just over an inch long. According to Bug Guide they are often found near marshy areas. The larvae feed on wild grape, evening primrose, etc. Speculation is that the adults don't feed, which is the case for a number of moths.

It's like a rough ceramic piece! Beautiful. I seldom see moths around here. There must be some though, just not in my line of sight.
