Ottawa River

I took a walk down to the Ottawa River this morning to see what it looked like. We live a few long blocks from the river, but there is a relatively steep slope between the river and the road, so I think it would be difficult for the river to breach that. I was surprised, however, by how high the water was. I have never seen the river like this. The pathway along the river is washed out except for a small section of a few hundred metres, on which I was standing. To the right is the steeper slope, showing a side path coming to the main river pathway, from the road. To the left is a slope of perhaps 3 feet, which is now completely engulfed. The power of the river is formidable, and I can only imagine the catastrophe faced by the hundreds, if not thousands of people who are flooded out of their homes along this river and others in the region. It is a very difficult time for them. Ottawa has declared a state of emergency and called in the army for help.

This river water looks pretty high and deep from this image, Christine. Things must be pretty bad to be declared in a state of emergency!! Those poor people and their houses that line the river, must be awful. I am pleased that you are not affected in these floods!!

Quelle dramatique situation. J'espère que tout ira bien pour toi.

You have captured so well the impact and drama here, the energy of the river and the weather are well conveyed.

People underestimate what flood water will do when it starts to impact people. Every place I have lived I have experienced flooding from evacuating, being isolated, to pulling stupid people out of rivers that they thought they could drive through. The only thing you can do is stay out of the way, wait it out, hope the community helps out afterward. Glad you and yours are safe and dry!

I have seen but thankfully not effected flood waters in places unimaginable. I hope you remain high and dry as this looks serious,

A very disturbing scene. Montreal is downstream from Ottawa so we are feeling the effects too.

Interesting documentary shot. I am guessing this is probably caused by melting. "V"
