This beautiful fly is unfortunately dead. Like so many insects it has been trapped by the milkweed flowers. The milkweeds attract hundreds of insects from honey bees, to moths, to butterflies, to flies, and more. When landing on the flowers they often get their feet caught and can't get free. It is not unusual to find milkweed flowers dotted with dead or struggling insects. It is possible to free them if the flowers are carefully opened to allow the legs to pull free.
