Common shrew (Sorex cinereus)

Reveler Conservation Area

Almost all shrews I've ever had a close look at have been found dead, as this one was, lying in the middle of the trail. Shrews are insectivores and have a high metabolic rate, needing to eat almost all the time. Otherwise they die. I assume this one just dropped dead on the trail as there was no sign of injury.

how interesting. just three days ago I came across two dead shrews together on a trail but didn't take a photo - didn't know that about them needing to eat all the time.
