Broad-headed bug (Alydus)

Fletcher Wildlife Garden

This bug has been crawling around flowers, as you can see the pollen on the body. These insects usually feed on the plant juices (bugs (Hemiptera) can't eat as such, they suck, unlike some other insects which can chew). I have also sometimes found them on dead animals such as shrews, voles, squirrels, so perhaps they suck the body fluids.
